Updated September 28, 2019 11:18:15Microsoft paid $5.3 billion for the rights to use the Xbox brand, according to the company’s financial report.
That’s up from the $2.1 billion it paid for the Xbox One brand in the fourth quarter of 2017.
The $2 billion increase represents an 8 percent increase in revenue, or about $15 billion.
The company also paid $1.8 billion for a new intellectual property licensing deal with Sony, for use on the PlayStation 4.
The Xbox One is still available through the PlayStation Store, while the PlayStation and Xbox consoles are available through retailers.
Microsoft’s revenue from the Xbox and PlayStation platforms totaled $567 million and $542 million, respectively, in 2018.
Microsoft reported that its operating profit for the year grew 17 percent to $564 million.
The company also reported that net income fell 12 percent to a loss of $566 million.
